Higher-Educational Institutions

After finishing secondary school or college students can apply to higher-educational institutions which include universities and colleges but also various professional schools, teacher-training schools, junior colleges, and institutes of technology. A qualification from the university is called Degree. The usual entrance age is about 18 years. The degrees are awarded at public degree ceremonies.

The Structure of Higher Education in the UK includes three main steps: Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, Doctorate.

Bachelor’s Degree is a 1st degree which usually called undergraduate degree and typically lasts for 3 years. In order to get a place in the university it is necessary to have good A-level results in at least 2 subjects or successfully complete of foundation program. The most popular Bachelor’s Degrees are: The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.); The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.); The Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.); The Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng. or BE); Bachelor of Education (BA or BEd); Bachelor of Medicine/ Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). Students can be required to write thesis.

Master’s Degree is a postgraduate degree, admission to a master's program normally requires holding a bachelor's degree. Master’s Degree programs can be divided into 1) Taught programmes aimed at developing knowledge or techniques in specialized subjects and usually involving a combination of coursework, assessment and often an independent project, 2) Research programmes aimed at providing thorough training in a particular discipline area through original investigation and experiment. The most popular Master’s degrees are: Master of Arts (MA); Master of Science (MSc); Master of Law (LLM); Master of Engineering (MEng); Master of Computer Science (MComp). Students can be required to write dissertation depending on the program.
