1.  PEST Analysis

Political:

  • Environmental regulations for cement industry are becoming tougher and tougher. International legislation and concern over carbon emissions and other forms of waste and pollution will have far reaching effects for the future activities of the cement industry. Government policies and regulations world-wide will inevitably challenge cement companies and plants to respond with alternative production processes, emission control technologies, and more effective and complex permit and mitigation strategies. Considering this Holcim Italia has to constantly review its anti-pollution and dedusting measures.
  • The cement industry, like other industrial sectors, is strictly regulated via national and international legislation regarding environmental protection, health and safety and quality of products. Cement is produced in accordance with European and national legislation as well as internal procedures. Strict regulations are applied and plants are operated on the basis of permits from national authorities. Emissions are regularly checked by the authorities. Considering this, Holcim Italia must check current legislative issues on the regular basis in terms of not being penalized.
  • Companies in the cement industry need to obtain operating licenses for new cement plants’ workings. Considering current environmental issues and shortening of natural resources, conditions and cost of obtaining operating licenses may change. Holcim Italia should act as a socially responsible company in terms of facilitating conditions of obtaining new operating licenses.

Economical:

  • The cement industry is one of the most energy intensive manufacturing industries worldwide. Most cement producers are set to face significant cost inflation as a result of the sharp rise in fuel prices.[1] As the prices for energy carriers continue to grow, Holcim Italia should be prepared to sudden changes in the cost of fuel. A company also may consider use of alternative flues in terms of lowering the costs of energy consumption.
  • Prices for energy carriers (oil, gas), which grew dramatically in the past few years, have resulted in unprecedented rise in freight rates. Many companies that need to move their commodities around the world or a country have been seriously affected by this jump in rates. It is not improbable that freight rates continue to grow in the future.[2] As Holcim Italia needs to transport its products around the country, it should be prepared to the sudden jumps in freight rates.
